The broccoli salad recipe looks good and I'm going to try it. But my main interest in contacting you relates to your Sam Scott Story. I'm an historian with the State Historical Society of Iowa and am currently finishing up a book length manuscript on the Underground Railroad in Iowa. In our Warren County file for the project is a photocopy of an Indianola newspaper article (undated and unidentified newspaper) titled "Sam Scott, Slave, Was Released by Warren Co. Man: California Visitor tells of some Early History Here When Negro Was A Resident." The article is not as richly detailed as the one on your blog-site, but I thought you might know of it and could give me a citation for it, that is, name of Indianola newspaper and date when it appeared.
